Growth vs Profitability
Valuation vs Return on Capital
Macroeconomic Indicators
Core business is deposit-taking and lending across retail, SME and corporate segments, plus fee income from cards, trade and treasury and cross-sold wealth, insurance and asset-management products; digital channels now carry most transaction volumes
Group cross-sell annuity: Scale players monetise the same customer relationship repeatedly through banking, broking, AMC and insurance subsidiaries, turning a plain lending relationship into a diversified fee annuity smaller peers cannot replicate
Digital transaction franchise: UPI and mobile banking volumes give large banks data and engagement that support underwriting and cross-sell beyond the balance sheet itself
Undifferentiated at the small end: Newer entrants without subsidiaries remain plain-vanilla spread lenders, competing mainly on rate and reach
Customers- Retail, SME and corporate borrowers and depositors, with the RBI functioning as a de facto super-stakeholder above all of them
Liability pricing power: Brand trust and digital convenience let large banks pay lower deposit rates than smaller peers for the same product
Low switching costs: Portable UPI and net banking plus easy account porting force continuous investment in service and pricing to retain retail and SME customers
Regulatory override: The RBI can supersede commercial priorities at will through licensing, ownership caps, digital-lending embargoes and provisioning rules, all outside bank control
Cost structure- Interest expense on deposits is the largest single cost, so deposit mix matters more than almost any other lever; CASA balances are near-free funding while term and wholesale deposits cost materially more
CASA franchise advantage: System savings-deposit share fell from ~34.6% to ~28.7% between March 2022 and March 2026 as savers shifted to term deposits, but banks with sticky retail CASA at 34-43% retain a real cost-of-funds edge
Credit-deposit ratio stress: System credit growth has outpaced deposits, lifting the ratio from ~70% in late 2021 to ~82% by February 2026, most pronounced at private banks, raising reliance on costlier wholesale funding
ECL provisioning reset: RBI's Expected Credit Loss framework, finalised April 2026 and effective April 2027 with a glide path to March 2031, shifts banks to forward-looking provisioning and will raise and front-load credit costs - the binding change is Stage 2, where 60-90 day overdue loans attract a minimum 5% provision against roughly 0.4% today, and RBI declined industry requests to soften the prudential floors
Bank credit grew 16.1% in FY26 to ~Rs 213.6 trillion outstanding; private banks have taken credit share from public banks over the past decade from ~25% to ~37-38% of system credit, though FY27 growth is expected to moderate
Strong FY27 opening: HDFC Bank advances grew 15.4% and Axis Bank 18.8% in the June 2026 quarter, while RBI's temporary FCNR(B) deposit incentives through September 2026 are drawing foreign-currency inflows that should ease funding pressure
New lending pools: Newly permitted acquisition financing from April 2026 and gold-loan LTV relaxation to 85% on small-ticket loans open genuinely new asset classes
Fee & distribution growth: Rising wealth, insurance and asset-management cross-sell plus branch expansion into semi-urban and rural markets add fee income that does not consume capital
Funding-constrained growth: Growth increasingly depends on funding availability rather than demand- with deposit growth structurally lagging credit, banks must compete harder and pay more for deposits to sustain expected loan growth
Structure- Around 20 listed private banks spanning large diversified franchises to small regional lenders, alongside public banks, small finance banks seeking universal licences, and fintechs in unsecured retail and payments
Closed licensing regime: No new universal banking licences have been granted in years, keeping the field structurally closed to new entrants- a genuine and unusual moat
PSB resurgence: Public banks are staging a valuation comeback after years of private-bank outperformance, competing more effectively for the same assets
Ownership reshaping: Consolidation continues, with SMBC's 2025 purchase of a 20% Yes Bank stake making it the largest shareholder, showing the competitive map is still being redrawn
Principal risks are margin pressure from funding competition, the ECL transition, and governance failures that scale does not prevent
Margin & funding pressure: The rising credit-deposit ratio and deposit competition are the dominant near-term risks, compounded by the FY2027 shift to ECL provisioning
Unsecured retail stress: Private banks carry structurally higher unsecured retail and MSME exposure than public banks, producing higher slippage- GNPAs are healthier at ~1.8% versus ~2.5% at PSBs, but analysts flag this stress as only recently peaking
Governance risk: Control failures remain live, illustrated by IndusInd Bank's 2025 derivatives-accounting lapse costing roughly Rs 1,960 crore, a ~2.35% net-worth impact and the exit of its CEO and deputy CEO
Capital buffer: Capital adequacy remains comfortable sector-wide, giving genuine room to absorb the ECL transition without equity raising
