Wiring harnesses, switches and switchgear, lighting systems, instrument clusters, sensors, small motors, electronic control units, horns, ignition systems and control cables, supplied across two-wheeler, passenger and commercial vehicle platforms
This is the one segment where content per vehicle is structurally rising: electrification, ADAS, connected features, digital clusters and the halogen-to-LED transition all add electronic content to every vehicle regardless of powertrain, and the cohort carries the highest concentration of large listed companies in Indian auto components, with seven Group A names among sixteen
It is heterogeneous and weakest at the high-technology end: the slate spans genuinely high-value electronics and near-commodity wiring assembly, and the higher-technology end is precisely where India is least self-sufficient- electricals account for only about 11% of national component exports against 34% for drive transmission
Customers are vehicle OEMs, with content increasingly determined at the platform design stage rather than through component tendering, plus a modest aftermarket in lighting and electricals
Early design-in creates unusually deep lock-in: once a harness architecture or cluster is engineered into a platform it is impractical to change mid-cycle, and rising electronic content means the supplier's share of vehicle value grows automatically with each model refresh
Design-in carries upfront risk and OEMs still push price-down: the supplier bears development cost and engineering risk ahead of any volume with recovery dependent on the platform selling, OEMs enforce annual price-down on electronics as aggressively as on mechanical parts, and global tier-1 electronics majors compete directly for the same platform business
Cost is dominated by copper, semiconductors, plastics and electronic components, with wiring harness assembly additionally labour-intensive, against comparatively lower fixed-asset intensity than forging or machining
Lower capital intensity and higher value-add give the best return profile: in the component sector, and labour cost advantage in harness assembly has made India a competitive global manufacturing base for the product
Import dependence is the structural weakness: national component imports rose 13% to $25.4 billion in FY26 specifically on advanced technology sourced from China, Japan and Germany, pushing the industry into trade deficit, and it is this segment's inputs that drive that bill
The rare earth magnet crisis crystallised the exposure: China restricted exports of rare earths and finished magnets from April 2025 while controlling over 90% of global processing, India imports roughly 80% of its requirement from China, and manufacturers were operating on only two to six weeks of magnet inventory against licensing delays exceeding 45 days
Growth is driven by rising electronic content per vehicle, electrification, safety and emission regulation, premiumisation of features, and the localisation opportunity created by the import bill
Content growth is independent of vehicle volume growth: so this segment compounds faster than the underlying auto cycle, and the halogen-to-LED shift, digital clusters, sensors and ADAS all raise value per vehicle on both ICE and electric platforms
Import substitution is a large, policy-supported opportunity: with advanced-component imports above $25 billion and government incentives directed at localisation, every point of localisation converts an import into domestic revenue for this segment
The same import dependence constrains realising it: localising advanced electronics requires technology access, semiconductor supply and capital Indian suppliers largely do not yet hold, and OEMs importing fully assembled motors to bypass magnet shortages would reduce domestic value addition and jeopardise PLI qualification
A segment with several scaled Indian players and multinational subsidiaries competing against global electronics tier-1s, with the balance of technology capability still tilted overseas
Design-in relationships and harness scale are real barriers: platform engineering capability and manufacturing scale protect leading Indian players, who have built genuine multi-product positions with global customers and manufacturing footprints
The high-technology end is a weak competitive position: semiconductors, advanced sensors and control electronics are dominated by global suppliers, and Indian participation is often assembly rather than design, which caps value capture and leaves the segment exposed to supply decisions taken abroad
Principal risks are supply-chain dependence on China, technology gaps at the high-value end, and platform-level concentration
The rare earth magnet episode demonstrated acute vulnerability: with over 90% of global processing in China, 80% import dependence and only weeks of inventory, a licensing change abroad can halt motor production in India, which ACMA called a wake-up call
Semiconductor gaps and upfront development risk compound: advanced electronic component supply carries the same structural China exposure that is driving the industry into trade deficit, and development cost incurred ahead of volume strands the investment if a platform underperforms
Offsetting: content per vehicle rises structurally regardless of powertrain, this is the highest-quality cohort in Indian auto components by listed-company profile, capital intensity is lower than in mechanical components, and localisation of a $25 billion import bill is a large policy-supported opportunity
