Micro NBFCs in the trade-to-trade surveillance segment and on the SME platform- very small finance, leasing and investment-holding entities holding a licence and a small book, many functioning primarily as investment or promoter-holding vehicles with little active lending

A few hold a genuine small book or niche: a handful lend actively in a local or collateral niche and can be profitable on an asset-light base where the opportunity is too small for larger NBFCs

Most have no real lending franchise: many are effectively investment, trading or holding shells with a licence and negligible active lending, trading under trade-to-trade surveillance with thin liquidity and poor disclosure, and some are near-dormant

Borrowers or counterparties are related parties, a few local clients, or the entity's own investment book, with little genuine third-party lending in the weaker names

Local or related relationships provide some activity: for the genuinely operating names, local relationships reach borrowers formal underwriting cannot, generating a modest spread

Related-party exposure and opacity are the norm: related-party lending and investment-holding structures dominate, disclosure is poor, and minority holders cannot assess book quality or intent

Economics are a thin spread or investment income on a tiny book with minimal infrastructure, and with surveillance/SME-compliance obligations weighing on negligible revenue

Asset-light and low-cost where genuinely operating: negligible overhead means a well-run micro lender can earn a return without capital, and a small clean book can be profitable

Funding is almost entirely absent: these entities cannot access bond or competitive bank funding, so any active lending is capital-constrained and sub-scale

Compliance cost and dormancy weigh disproportionately: scale-based regulation and surveillance/SME-compliance costs fall on a tiny base, and a large share of the cohort is near-dormant with minimal lending activity

Prospects are entity-specific and often minimal- these firms do not participate in retail-credit growth, and outcomes hinge on a small niche book, the investment portfolio, or corporate activity rather than any market trend

A niche book or up-cycle can help a well-run micro name: a specific local lending niche, or gains on the investment book, can support the better-positioned names

The structural direction is consolidation, exit or dormancy: scale-based regulation, absent funding and surveillance illiquidity leave little room to lend, raise capital or grow, and many will consolidate, surrender the licence or stay dormant

An extremely fragmented tail of micro finance and investment-holding entities with no scale, brand or funding edge, set apart mainly by their trade-to-trade or SME-platform surveillance status

The licence and any genuine book carry narrow value: an NBFC licence and, for the operating names, a small local book provide the only protection

There is no moat and competition is one-sided: banks, SFBs, larger NBFCs and fintech lenders dominate, and the shell names have effectively no lending franchise to defend

This is the most structurally vulnerable NBFC-lender tier, combining absent funding, governance and related-party risk, illiquidity and dormancy

Funding absence and governance risk are existential: these entities cannot fund active lending competitively, related-party lending and investment-holding structures are common, and disclosure is poor

Surveillance status, illiquidity and dormancy compound: the cohort trades in the trade-to-trade or SME-platform segment with thin liquidity, several entities are near-dormant, and minority holders bear real governance and concentration risk

Offsetting: a genuinely operating micro lender with a local niche can be profitable on an asset-light base, gains on an investment book can add value, and consolidation or licence monetisation may occasionally deliver value to shareholders
