Loans against household gold jewellery extended through dense branch networks and increasingly online, alongside diversification into microfinance, affordable housing, personal and small-business lending

This is among the most structurally attractive lending products in India: the collateral is liquid, standardised, held in the lender's own vault and auctionable quickly, so recovery is fast and loss-given-default minimal, while yields stay high because borrowers value speed over rate, and short tenure lets the book reprice quickly to rate or gold-price moves

The product is undifferentiated and the diversification has hurt: lenders compete on turnaround time, LTV and rate, and the microfinance diversification both major players pursued has proved a source of losses rather than a hedge

Customers are small traders, farmers, households and self-employed borrowers needing short-tenure liquidity, often outside formal credit, pledging gold in a socially normal and rapidly executed transaction

Demand is remarkably inelastic and counter-cyclical: borrowers come precisely when other credit is unavailable, while rising gold prices raise eligible loan value per gram so the same customer borrows more; average ticket size at one player rose to about Rs 128,000 from Rs 68,000 within a single year

Borrowers are price-sensitive and auctions are politically visible: banks compete for the same collateral at lower rates, and emotional attachment to pledged jewellery makes auctions reputationally sensitive

Cost is the spread over borrowings less credit cost, against a large fixed branch, security and vault infrastructure that must be staffed regardless of loan volumes

Economics are exceptional when volumes fill the network: one player's gold AUM per branch reached Rs 13.9 crore with online gold loans at 92% of gold AUM, sharply lifting productivity, while cost of borrowing fell to 8.80% and capital adequacy stood at 21.3%, and core gold-book credit cost is among the lowest in Indian lending even at high yields

Utilisation drives everything and a gold-price fall cuts both ways: the fixed branch and vault base cannot be shrunk quickly, and a decline in gold prices reduces eligible loan size and collateral cover simultaneously

The diversification cost is visible: one player's microfinance subsidiary reported gross NPAs of 23.6%, dragging full-year consolidated profit down 17.5% even as its gold book nearly doubled, so the non-gold businesses destroyed value the core created

Growth is driven by gold prices, formalisation of an enormous unorganised pawnbroking market, and regulatory shifts favouring secured over unsecured lending

FY26 was exceptional and regulation compounded it: the sector leader's profit rose 98% to Rs 10,607 crore with AUM crossing Rs 1.36 trillion and a peer grew consolidated AUM 48.3%, while RBI raised the permitted LTV on gold loans below Rs 2.5 lakh from 75% to 85% in June 2025 and its September 2025 unsecured-lending tightening pushed demand toward secured gold credit

Formalisation is the quiet long-run driver: a large share of gold-backed borrowing still happens through unorganised pawnbrokers at worse terms, and every regulatory tightening of that informal channel shifts volume to licensed lenders

Growth is heavily leveraged to the gold price: a sustained correction would reduce eligible loan values, slow disbursement and compress collateral cover on the existing book at the same time

A duopoly of two large specialist NBFCs alongside banks, regional gold financiers and a vast unorganised pawnbroking segment

Barriers are physical, regulatory and scale-based: branch networks with vault and security infrastructure, valuation and auction capability and registrations take years and capital, the leader operates over 4,800 branches holding roughly 202 tonnes of gold, and valuation, storage, insurance and auction execution carry fixed costs sub-scale operators cannot spread

Banks compete on rate and arbitrage has narrowed: banks compete directly at lower cost of funds and have expanded gold lending aggressively, the product is undifferentiated, and harmonised RBI rules across banks and NBFCs have narrowed the regulatory arbitrage specialists once enjoyed

Principal risks are gold price direction, regulatory intervention in LTV and conduct, and the drag from diversification into unsecured lending

Gold-price direction and regulatory intervention are the dominant risks: a sustained fall would shrink new disbursement capacity and erode collateral cover simultaneously (the sector has de-rated sharply on exactly this), and RBI has repeatedly intervened on LTV caps, disbursement mode, auction transparency and advertising in both directions, so the current favourable LTV regime cannot be assumed permanent

Microfinance diversification has been value-destructive: one player's MFI subsidiary sat at 23.6% gross NPA with full-year profit down despite a near-doubling of the gold book

Offsetting: collateral is liquid and quickly realisable, demand is counter-cyclical, the shift from unsecured to secured lending favours the product structurally, and formalisation of unorganised pawnbroking is a long-run share gain
