Micro-cap, SME-platform and surveillance-group IT services firms- very small staffing, application-services and niche software shops, many effectively single-service or single-client, with several dormant or near-dormant and a large share illiquid

A defined niche can sustain a well-run micro firm: a specific domain, product or government/legacy engagement can support a viable single-service shop insulated from tier-1 competition where the niche is too small for larger firms to prioritise

Most have no differentiation, scale or disclosure: the offering is undifferentiated staff augmentation at low rates with no proprietary IP, many names are illiquid micro-caps in the trade-to-trade surveillance segment, and some are dormant shells with negligible revenue

Customers are a handful of small domestic or overseas clients, or effectively none where the entity is dormant, with extreme account concentration the norm

Legacy and niche relationships can persist: a long-standing client, a government or legacy engagement or a specific domain relationship can be durable for a well-run micro firm

Concentration and powerlessness are extreme: losing a single account can halve revenue, these firms have no rate-negotiating power, and dormant shells have no customer franchise at all

Cost is people, subcontracting and compliance on a tiny base, borne without the utilisation, delivery scale or fixed-cost dilution that even established small caps enjoy

Asset-light and flexible where genuinely operating: a micro IT firm carries low fixed overhead and can be profitable in a niche without capital, and capacity flexes quickly

There is no operating leverage and the rate spread is thinnest: sub-scale delivery competes at the commodity floor where AI-assisted delivery and offshore rivals compress the spread, and reskilling or tooling investment is unaffordable

Compliance cost and dormancy weigh disproportionately: listing, membership and compliance obligations fall on a tiny revenue base, and a large share of the cohort is dormant or near-dormant with minimal activity

Prospects are idiosyncratic and often nil- these firms do not participate in enterprise digital or AI demand, and outcomes depend on the individual micro firm's niche or on corporate revival

A niche or a market up-cycle can lift a well-run micro firm: a defensible niche, a specific government or legacy engagement, or a broad IT up-cycle can support the better-run names

The structural direction is strongly adverse: AI substitutes exactly the routine work these firms perform, share migrates to scaled and established players, and sub-scale economics plus surveillance-segment illiquidity leave little room to invest, reposition or even remain active

An extremely fragmented tail of micro and SME IT shops competing at the commodity floor against unlisted staffing firms, freelancers, offshore rivals, AI tooling and the established small caps above them

A narrow niche gives the only protection: a specific domain, product or government/legacy incumbency protects particular micro firms in corners too small for larger competitors

There is no scale, brand or funding moat: the established firms and unlisted rivals out-deliver and out-price the micro tail, AI tooling erodes the commodity work, and dormant shells have nothing to defend

This is the most structurally vulnerable IT-services cohort, combining AI substitution, sub-scale economics, illiquidity and governance concerns

AI substitution and sub-scale economics are existential: AI-assisted development substitutes the routine coding, testing and maintenance that is the cohort's core, and sub-scale firms lack any capital to reskill or reposition

Concentration, illiquidity and governance compound: single-client concentration makes contract losses fatal, a large share are illiquid micro-caps in the trade-to-trade surveillance segment, and several are dormant or near-dormant with thin disclosure

Offsetting: the asset-light model means a well-run micro firm can be profitable without capital in a defensible niche, and a specific government, legacy or domain engagement, or a broad IT up-cycle, can support the better-positioned names
